Elysian Wellness Clinic: Reliable Diabetes Testing with Dr. Chereena Walker, DO
Diabetes testing and monitoring help to diagnose the condition and support our patients’ ongoing health. Our experienced team utilizes several reliable tests to ensure accurate assessments and personalized care.
Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG) Test:
If your fasting blood sugar level is 126 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or higher on two separate occasions, the FPG test typically indicates diabetes. Our team will guide you through preparation and interpret your results to determine the next steps.
Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT):
For patients who need further evaluation, we offer the OGTT. After fasting, you’ll drink a special glucose solution, and your blood sugar will be measured two hours later. This test is especially useful for identifying gestational diabetes or when results from other tests are inconclusive.
Hemoglobin A1c (Glycated Hemoglobin) Test:
The A1c test is a key part of both diagnosing and managing diabetes here at Elysian Wellness Clinic. This simple blood test reflects your average blood sugar over the past two to three months. An A1c level of 6.5% or higher on two separate tests usually confirms diabetes. We use this test to help tailor your ongoing treatment plan.
Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose (SMBG):
For patients managing diabetes, we provide education and support for self-monitoring through fingerstick blood sugar testing. This helps you make informed daily decisions about diet, activity, and medication.
Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM):
Elysian Wellness Clinic also offers guidance on using continuous glucose monitors. CGMs track your glucose levels throughout the day and night, providing real-time data to optimize your diabetes management.
Random Plasma Glucose Test:
If you are experiencing symptoms of high blood sugar, our team can perform a random plasma glucose test. A reading of 200 mg/dL or higher, especially with classic symptoms, can indicate diabetes and prompt immediate care.
At Elysian Wellness Clinic, each diabetes test is chosen based on your unique risk factors, symptoms, and health needs. Our goal is to provide clear answers and compassionate support every step of the way—whether you need a diagnosis or ongoing diabetes management.
If you have risk factors for diabetes—such as being overweight, having high blood pressure, leading a sedentary lifestyle, or having a family history of diabetes—regular blood sugar testing is essential for early detection and effective management.
According to the American Diabetes Association, adults with risk factors should have their blood sugar tested at least once every three years starting at age 35. However, we recognize that everyone’s health profile is unique. Suppose you are overweight and have additional risk factors. In that case, our healthcare providers may recommend starting screenings earlier and repeating them more frequently, sometimes as often as every one to two years.
If your test results suggest prediabetes or are borderline, our team will work closely with you to arrange more frequent monitoring and personalized preventive care. Those with a strong family history of diabetes—especially in first-degree relatives—may also benefit from earlier and more regular testing.
Understanding your body’s ability to manage blood sugar is an important part of maintaining your overall health. That’s why we offer several key diagnostic tests in our clinic:
Fasting Blood Sugar Test
Our team can perform a fasting blood sugar test to measure the level of glucose in your blood after you haven’t eaten for at least eight hours. This test is a vital screening tool for diabetes and prediabetes, giving us a quick snapshot of your blood sugar levels. Results below 100 mg/dL are typically considered normal, while higher levels may indicate impaired glucose regulation—helping us identify concerns early and personalize your care.
A1C Test
The A1C (hemoglobin A1C) test, available at Elysian Wellness Clinic, provides an average of your blood sugar levels by measuring the percentage of hemoglobin with glucose attached. Conveniently, the A1C test does not require fasting, making it easier to fit into your busy schedule.
Glucose Tolerance Test
Our clinic also offers the glucose tolerance test, which assesses how your body processes sugar over a set period. After fasting overnight, you’ll have an initial blood sugar measurement taken. You’ll then drink a glucose-rich beverage, and your blood sugar will be checked at intervals—usually after one and two hours. This test is especially useful for diagnosing gestational diabetes during pregnancy, as well as identifying type 2 diabetes or prediabetes.
Diabetes tests measure the amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood. This helps us determine if you have normal blood sugar control, prediabetes, or diabetes, so we can work together on a personalized care plan.
How to Prepare for Your Diabetes Test. Depending on the test your Elysian provider recommends, preparation may vary:
• Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG) Test: For this test, we’ll ask you not to eat or drink anything for at least 8 hours, except water, before your blood sample is taken. Many patients find it easiest to schedule this test in the morning.
• Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT): Similar to the FPG test, you’ll need to fast. After your first blood draw, you’ll drink a sweet glucose solution here, and we’ll check your blood sugar again after two hours.
• Hemoglobin A1C Test: No fasting is required for this test; you can eat and drink as usual before coming in.
Understanding Your Results: Your provider will review your results with you and explain what they mean:
• Fasting Plasma Glucose:
Below 100 mg/dL = Normal
100–125 mg/dL = Prediabetes
126 mg/dL or higher (on two separate tests) = Diabetes
• Oral Glucose Tolerance Test:
Below 140 mg/dL = Normal
140–199 mg/dL = Prediabetes
200 mg/dL or higher = Diabetes
• Hemoglobin A1C:
Below 5.7% = Normal
5.7–6.4% = Prediabetes
6.5% or higher = Diabetes
If your results indicate prediabetes or diabetes, our Elysian team will guide you through your next steps. This may include lifestyle changes, further testing, or starting a medication plan tailored to your needs.
